EVs are far better for the planet than fossil-fuel vehicles, but their batteries rely on mining cobalt, lithium and nickel through complex global supply chains with real sustainability and human-rights challenges. Montgomery argues that ‘100% sustainable mines don’t exist at the moment’ — the priority should be transparency and continuous improvement from mining companies — and that European battery start-ups have an advantage in building sustainable supply chains from scratch, rather than retrofitting legacy relationships.
